Shannon airport

SHANNON AIRPORT HISTORY

In the late nineteen thirties, The Flying Boats dominated the skies, and a Terminal was based at Foynes, located to the South of the River Shannon estuary.

It was later realised with technology moving forward, that sooner or later an airport and runway would be needed.

Back in nineteen thirty six, the Irish Government decided that it would use a site in Rineanna, to construct the airport.

But the site where the airport was planned to be built was very wet and boggy. They decided to drain the land, and by the early forties, the land was suitable. They named it Shannon Airport, and later In 1945, ruways were extended for transatlantic landings.

Shannon airport became famous for being the gateway between Europe and America, especially because of the fast rise in International flights. Shannon airport became the easiest place to stop before the long trip to, and from America.

During the nineteen eighties, Shannon serviced several new airlines. Aeroflot (soviot airline) had a fuel farm based at shannon airport in 1980. The fuel farm held Soviet fuel, and soon Aeroflot planes were stopping at Shannon to refuel via destinations in North America and Central and South America.

During the 1990's, The Bilateral Agreement with the US, was renegotiated resulting in less planes being required to land at Shannon Airport. But during 1996 the start of the Continental Airlines, who were flying from Shannon and Dublin airports to and from New Jersey.

With tthe huge Irish Economy boom during the late nineties, Shannon airport was again very successful, with also the the improving Nothern Ireland situation. By the year 2000, Shannon airport had more than two million passengers passing through it's terminals.
