RIVER SHANNON GUIDE
The River Shannon is, the longest river in Ireland. It's length is approximately 386 km or 240 miles.
It is a division between the west of Ireland and the East and South.
County Clare,is West of the Shannon, but comes under the province of Munster, is an exception.
The
river represents a major physical barrier between West and East, with
less than 20 crossing-points between Limerick city in the
South,
and Dowra in the north.
The Shannon river flows generally South from the Shannon Pot in County Cavan, and then West and unloading into the Atlantic Ocean through the 115 km long Shannon Estuary.
Limerick city is located where the river water meets the sea water of the estuary. The Shannon is not affected by tides East of Limerick.
The river Shannon runs through, or between eleven of the counties of Ireland.
Lakes on the Shannon include Lough Allen, Lough Ree and Lough Derg.
The rivers Brosna, Inny,and Suck are Tributaries of the river Shannon.
The
river Shannon is over three hundred kilometres (200 miles) long, but rises just seventy six metres
above sea level.
This means that the river Shannon is easily navigable, with not many locks along its length.
Shipping in Shannon estuary was developed extensively during the nineteen eighties, with Euro2 billion investment.A tanker terminal at Foynes and an oil jetty at Shannon Airport were constucted in nineteen eighty two.

Fishing for Salmon and Brown Trout are part of a tradition going back for hundreds of years. There are plenty of Brown Trout in many of the lakes.
