COUNTY LIMERICK GUIDE
County Limerick is located within the province of Munster, and is one of the traditional counties of Ireland. It was named after the city of Limerick, which has an urban population of more than a hundred and thirty thousand.

The River Shannon flows through Limerick, and into the Atlantic Ocean to the North of the county.
The River Shannon Estuary forms the Northern boundary of the county, giving Limerick
an outlet to the Atlantic ocean, the main ports being Limerick
and Foynes
Under the city, the waterway is known as the Shannon Estuary. Because the estuary is shallow, County Limerick's most important port is several kilometres to the West of Limerick city, at Foynes.
Newcastle West is the largest county town outside Limerick city, with a population of about ten thousand.
County Limerick is known as the green heartland of Munster, when it is compared with the rest of the province.
To the East, the majority of the land consists of a fertile limestone plain, which is ringed by mountains on its borders, including The Ballyhoura Mountains, Slieve Felims and The Galtees.
The highest point in County Limerick is at Galtymore,standing more than nine hundred metres. It lies on the border with County Tipperary, in the far South Eastern corner of the county.
This Eastern part of county Limerick is the heartland of the Golden Vale, the rich, verdant fields famous for the dairy Industry.
To the West, the Mullaghareirk Mountains stretch across the county, with fantastic views East over county Limerick and West into County Kerry.
Volcanic rock was found in many areas of county Limerick, including Knockfierna, Carrigogunnell, and also at and principally at Pallasgreen/Kilteely to the East.
It turned out to be the most compact
carboniferous volcanic districts (for it's size) in Ireland and
the UK.
