BOATING ON THE RIIVER SHANNON

The River Shannon is the longest river in Ireland and is commercial traffic-free, with more than two hundred kilometres (one hundred and fifty miles) of navigational waters.

The beautifully scenic town of Carrick-on-Shannon is the county town of County Leitrim, and is one of Ireland's major cruising centres. It has a wide choice boating provisions and has many shops, restaurants and public houses.

If you head North from here, you will come to Boyle, which is a very pretty town with a Cistercian Abbey dating back to the twelve century.

If you travel South of Carrick, the river gently widens and you will cruise past a small group of villages and towns. As you travel further down the river, you will come to a group of loughs, until you arrive at Lough Ree.

Lough Ree is well known locally for fishing, where you can catch and cook your dinner, if you choose.

On the Southern Shore, a very popular place to stop is Hodson Bay, then you can travel on to Athlone. Athlone is famous for it's castle and also has very popular golf courses.

It takes about twelve hours to cruise from Carrick to Athlone, but that depends on how many stops that you take, and how long you stop for while you cruise along.
